Club football is back in full swing across Europe with Manchester United and Fulham ushering in the 2024-25 Premier League season, the former walking away with a slender away victory. Defending champions Manchester City were off to a winning start along expected lines, beating Chelsea 2-0. Title contenders Arsenal and Liverpool too were off to winning starts.
Across the channel, Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Le Havre 4-1 to begin their title defence in style. Further down south, Real Madrid’s title defence began on a somewhat damp note as they were held to a draw by Real Mallorca, while fierce rivals Barcelona kicked things off with a 2-1 victory.
Serie A witnessed Inter Milan and AC Milan, the two teams that finished at the top of the table last season, start off with identical 2-2 draws. As for the German top-flight Bundesliga, it is the last of the big European leagues to begin its season with Matchweek 1 starting on Friday.
In the upcoming weekend, Premier League teams such as City, Arsenal and Liverpool will be aiming to collect a second win in as many games while LaLiga will witness French superstar Kylian Mbappe’s big league debut for Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Additionally, Bayern Munich will be hoping to begin the Vincent Kompany era in the Bundesliga on a winning note when they face Wolfsburg on Sunday. They had suffered the shock of finishing third in the Bundesliga last season, which ultimately led to the club firing manager Thomas Tuchel.
