On 18 October 2024, Ukrainian agribusiness giants MHP and Avangardco were named the largest poultry and egg producers in Europe by WATTPoultry International, as reported by Liga.
Ukraine’s agribusiness sector faces severe disruption from Russia’s ongoing invasion, affecting farming, production, and exports. Despite over 30% of arable land being in combat zones, Ukraine remains a key global supplier of grain, meat, and vegetable oil.
The rankings confirmed MHP as Europe’s top poultry producer, with an annual output of 704 million birds, surpassing the UK-based 2 Sisters Food Group (525 million) and France’s LDC (477.3 million). MHP employs more than 32,000, with over 4,000 employees outside Ukraine.
Avangardco, another Ukrainian leader, topped Europe’s egg production with 13.3 million laying hens annually, outpacing competitors like Poland’s Wozniak Poultry Farms (11 million) and Denmark’s DAVA Foods Holding (7.4 million).
Ovostar Union, also from Ukraine, secured sixth place among egg producers with 6.4 million hens.
According to WATTPoultry International’s ratings, MHP ranked eighth globally among the largest poultry producers, trailing behind JBS (Brazil, 4.44 billion birds) and Tyson Foods (US, 2.08 billion). Avangardco placed 15th globally among egg producers, competing with leading companies like Cal-Maine Foods (US, 44.5 million hens) and Proteina Animal (Mexico, 40 million hens).
