Manchester City have kept their 100% record in the UEFA Women’s Champions League after beating Hammarby 2-0 on Tuesday night and continue to the top their group.
Manchester City met Swedish side Hammarby in their third matchday of the women’s Champions League group stage and were successful in their quest in claiming another three points.
It was goalless for the whole first 45 minutes between the two clubs, and it was at the 47th minute when Laura Blindkilde Brown found the back of the Hammarby net to give the Cityzens a 1-0 lead.
Then, with only 10 minutes left until the 90th minute, Aoba Fujino scored her second goal of the Champions League campaign, which gave the sky blues a 2-0 victory.
Elsewhere, Barcelona once again destroyed their opponents with a huge goal margin, last time, margin. Last they defeated Hammarby 9-0 and this time around, they were 7-0 winners over St. Polten.
Barcelona are definitely increasing their goal difference but, they do remain on second spot with six points and City, after beating the Catalan champions 2-0 on matchday one, are on nine points and continue to look to win their group with three matches remaining.
While the result worked out the way the club and its fans were hoping for, there was still some discomfort as Lauren Hemp missed the match and then Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw who picked up a little knock.
Starting with Hmep, the boss said, “Hopefully she can play against Chelsea. There’s an opportunity there. So we’ll just have to take our moment and have a converstion with the medical staff.”
Moving on to Shaw, Taylor confirmed her fitness state, “Yeah she’s okay, she’s been great for us and gets up and gets back onto the pitch and the very next action after she came off in the first half is incredible, with the opportunity to close the keeper down and she does it really well.”
Taylor then talked about the 2-0 victory achieved by his team the other night over Hammarby, “I think it’s fantastic to be top of the group and taking maximum points, missing Viv (Miedema), Laia (Aleixandri) and Naomi Layzell and we don’t start Jill Roord and missing Lauren as well. Great credit to the girls to be able to do that.”
Manchester City will be hoping they can see some currently injured players return for their big game against Chelsea this upcoming weekend, with the Women’s Super League top two fighting each other for three points – a victory for Chelsea would take them top with a two-point lead, while if City are successful they will remain at the top and create a four-point gap.
