This should be a belter, and it looks one of the open-looking renewals in recent times. With City Of Troy and Economics not at the gig, and the Epsom Oaks winner retired, the absence of some of the megastars of the Classic generation give this race a wonderful shape from a betting perspective.
My tentative vote goes to the Aidan O’Brien trained LOS ANGELES who has had a very successful season, winning the Irish Derby and the Great Voltigeur, and despite sweating-up and being edgy before the Epsom Derby, he still managed to run a good race to finish third.
He warmed up for this by finishing strongly to finish fourth over an inadequate 10f in the Irish Champion Stakes last time out and he will be much more suited by today’s test. He is versatile in regards to underfoot conditions, and with the world’s best jockey Ryan Moore in the saddle, a massive run can be expected.
SOSIE loves Longchamp and cut in the ground, so everything looks in place for a big performance from the Andre Fabre trained 3-year-old. Fillies have an excellent record in this showpiece event, and it is hard to envisage the daughter of Sea The Stars being far away as she goes in search of her third win on the spin.
She was fantastic when winning the Grand Prix de Paris, and looked excellent when getting the job done in the Prix Niel last time out so couldn’t arrive here in much better shape.
Having been handed a lovely draw in Stall 3, it is hard to make excuses for her as she bids to give master winning-most Arc trainer Andre Fabre a ninth victory in this event. Her raw form may need to go up a level, but this lightly-raced sort ticks a lot of the right boxes for the home team.
At a huge price, I wouldn’t rule out a big run from the David Menuisier trained SUNWAY. He has been a little bit of a ‘nearly horse’ this season, but his form in defeat stacks up, and isn’t all that far off Los Angeles from their meeting in the Irish Derby.
Sunway possibly found the ground a bit quick when being placed third in a messy St Leger last time out, and should be happier in this scenario on slower ground. He shouldn’t be found wanting for stamina and on soft ground he is a player.
The downside is that he has been handed a car-park draw in stall 15, but given that he likes to be dropped in anyway, it probably isn’t too much of an inconvenience given his running style. Oisin Murphy takes the ride, and this combination can stay on past beaten runners when others have cried enough.
