As the end of summer approaches, many holidaymakers will be gearing up for a last-minute getaway. For those on a budget, a new trend is gaining momentum across Europe: ‘destination dupes.’
These are lesser-known, budget-friendly alternatives to some of the continent’s most popular (and often overcrowded) tourist spots.
This trend offers a perfect opportunity to explore new locations that promise the same charm, beauty and cultural richness without the hefty price tags and overwhelming crowds.
The concept of destination dupes is similar to the popular fashion/designer dupe phenomenon, where affordable alternatives to high-end products become the go-to choice.
According to some travel experts, the rise in demand for these alternative destinations stems from a growing desire among travellers to avoid the drawbacks of tourist hotspots. This includes long queues, inflated prices and fully booked accommodations, which have become common in Europe’s most visited cities such as Paris, Rome and Barcelona.
Travellers are said to be increasingly seeking authentic experiences in quieter, less commercialised areas, driven by a combination of cost-effectiveness and the desire for a more intimate travel experience.
Melanie Fish, Chief Trend Tracker for Expedia Brands, said dupes are like cheaper versions of luxury brands. “(They) are destinations that are a little unexpected, sometimes more affordable, but every bit as delightful as the tried-and-true places travellers love,” she wrote in the company’s report.
Here are some of the top European destination dupes you should consider for your next trip:
Paros, Greece – a dupe for Santorini: Paros offers the iconic whitewashed buildings and stunning Aegean Sea views that Santorini is famous for but without the overwhelming tourist influx. This idyllic escape combines authentic Greek culture with serene landscapes, making it a perfect alternative for those looking to avoid Santorini’s skyrocketing prices and packed streets.
Istria, Croatia – a dupe for Dalmatia: If the Croatian coast is calling your name, skip the crowds of Split and Dubrovnik and head to Istria instead. Known for its picturesque towns like Rovinj, Istria offers the same stunning Adriatic views, historical sites and excellent cuisine, all at a fraction of the cost and with far fewer tourists.
Bergen, Norway – a dupe for Stockholm: While Stockholm is a fantastic city, Bergen offers a similar Scandinavian charm with its colourful wooden houses and rich maritime history. Bergen provides a breathtaking backdrop of mountains with a vibrant cultural scene, all without the hustle and bustle of Sweden’s capital.
Liverpool, UK – a dupe for London: London might be the first city that comes to mind when you think of the UK, but Liverpool offers a comparable experience with a distinct Northern twist. Home to The Beatles, a thriving arts scene and rich naval history, Liverpool is emerging as a cultural hub that’s easier on the wallet and much less crowded. The museums, galleries and vibrant waterfront make it an increasingly attractive alternative for those who find London too overwhelming.
Palermo, Italy – a dupe for Lisbon: As Lisbon’s popularity has soared, so have the prices and tourist numbers. Palermo, the capital of Sicily, offers a similar blend of history, architecture and vibrant street life, with the added allure of being less popular with tourists. Palermo’s culinary scene also rivals Lisbon, with an array of local dishes that showcase the island’s unique Mediterranean flavours.
Córdoba, Spain – a dupe for Seville: Seville is often top of mind for those seeking Andalusian charm, with its stunning Moorish architecture and lively flamenco culture. However, Córdoba, just a short train ride away, offers a similarly rich experience without the crowds. Home to the iconic Mezquita, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a maze of charming old streets, Córdoba provides a more relaxed atmosphere while still embodying the essence of southern Spain.
Destination dupes offer several advantages beyond just saving money. They provide a chance to explore Europe’s secreted spots and connect with local cultures in a more intimate setting. Additionally, these lesser-known spots often offer more authentic experiences, giving you something new to talk about at your next social gathering.
“Choosing a destination dupe is like finding a hidden gem. You get to experience the essence of a famous location without the downsides of over-tourism,” said Jon Gieselman, President of Expedia Brands.
As 2024 closes in, the rise of destination dupes is likely to reshape travel within Europe, offering more personalised and less crowded experiences. For those frequently travelling across Europe’s borders, this trend provides a fresh perspective on well-loved regions and an opportunity to explore the continent in a more meaningful way.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet beach getaway, an exciting city break, or a scenic countryside retreat, there’s a destination dupe waiting to be discovered.
